Van says Kape declined title fight
Joshua Van, the UFC flyweight champion, says Manel Kape turned down a proposed shot at his title.
Van, who seized the 125-pound belt in December in a swift stoppage of Alexandre Pantoja, is pushing for his first defense.
Kape recently stopped Brandon Royval and publicly called for the matchup, and Van says a Feb. 21 Houston date was reportedly discussed before Kape passed.
The champion would not provide specifics but maintains he is ready and implied the challenger stepped away from the opportunity.
With Pantoja back in training and other contenders in the mix, Van suggested Kape may not be the opponent he faces first.
