WBC president says Walsh’s move to Zuffa Boxing set back his title hopes

WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman said he regrets that Callum Walsh’s switch to Zuffa Boxing has effectively removed the 24-year-old from the WBC title pathway, reportedly costing him his WBC status.

Walsh, who signed with Dana White in 2023, headlined Zuffa Boxing’s Las Vegas debut and improved to 16-0 via decision in a bout some described as lackluster.

Sulaiman noted Walsh competed above his usual weight class and relinquished his continental crown, calling the case an example of confusion caused by the new promotion’s different structure.

Officials say Zuffa Boxing has not coordinated with existing sanctioning bodies, and the promotion’s future recognition may depend on legislation currently being discussed.

Sulaiman added the WBC would welcome Walsh back if he returns, but he warned the move has likely delayed the fighter’s march toward a world title.
