Makhachev's manager doubts Garry as next challenger

    Ali Abdelaziz, manager for Islam Makhachev and Kamaru Usman, said Ian Machado Garry may not be the right next challenger for Makhachev.

    He reportedly favors a Makhachev vs. Usman matchup and questioned Garry's recent form and commercial appeal.

    Abdelaziz noted other welterweights are available and suggested Usman would pose a tougher stylistic test for Makhachev's legacy.

    Makhachev has said he will face whoever the promotion chooses, and Abdelaziz indicated Islam would like a May or June return.

    These comments appeared in an interview with MMA Junkie on Jan. 28, 2026, and the UFC's plans are reportedly still being discussed.
